The three-pronged approach to EMDR: A game changer for therapy

Writer: Nick CacuickNick Cacuick

When people think of therapy, they might picture lying on a couch, unpacking every

childhood memory with a therapist who occasionally says, “hmm, interesting.” But EMDR

(Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) takes a more active approach. EMDR is not

about endless chit-chat; it’s about getting to the heart of things - quickly, effectively, and with

a little help from your brain’s natural ability to heal itself.

EMDR's three-pronged method takes therapy up a notch. By addressing the past, present, and

future all at once, it’s like a superhero who multi-tasks for your mental health. Whether

you’re working through old traumas, managing daily stress, or gearing up for whatever life

throws at you next, this approach has got you covered.

"...imagine therapy as a tripod, with each prong representing your past, present, and future. If one leg is wobbly, the whole thing could come crashing down. EMDR makes sure each leg is stable, so you’re not just surviving—you’re thriving."

Let’s take a closer look at why this method is such a game-changer and yes, there might be a laugh or two along the way.

Prong One: Processing the past (why am I still embarrassed by that 8th-grade concert?)

The first prong of EMDR focuses on those past memories that still hang around like

unwelcome houseguests. Maybe it’s an old trauma, or maybe it’s that embarrassing thing you

said at a party five years ago. Either way, your brain keeps playing it on a loop, and it’s time

to hit pause. With EMDR, you don’t have to keep rehashing the details in endless sessions. Instead, the process uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to help your brain reprocess these memories. The result? They lose their emotional charge, and suddenly, that

memory of tripping onstage at the 8th-grade concert is just something that happened, not

something that still makes you cringe at 2AM.

Prong Two: Managing the present (why did I lose It over a missing sock?)

Once the past has been put in its place, it’s time to deal with what’s happening right now.

Let’s face it - everyday life can be stressful. Maybe it’s work, maybe it’s family, or maybe

it’s that single sock that disappeared in the laundry for the third time this week. EMDR’s

second prong helps you understand why certain things set you off and gives you tools to stay

grounded when life gets overwhelming. Instead of reacting to daily stress like you’re on an emotional rollercoaster, you learn to manage your triggers in a way that makes you feel more in control. No more snapping at your partner over spilled coffee or getting flustered by slow Wi-FI. You’ll be cool as a cucumber, no matter what life throws your way.

Prong Three: Preparing for the future (why am I already stressed about a meeting next month?)

And now, for the grand finale: the future. Most therapy methods help you unpack the past and

deal with the present, but EMDR’s third prong is all about getting you ready for what’s next.

Whether it’s a big presentation at work, a family reunion, or just the unpredictability of life in

general, this step helps you mentally prepare without the anxiety. Think of it as rehearsal for life’s stressful moments. EMDR lets you practice how you’ll respond to future challenges, so when the moment arrives, you’re not just hoping for the best—you’ve already trained for it. It’s like showing up to life’s events with a cheat sheet, minus the guilt.

So, you could imagine therapy as a tripod, with each prong representing your past, present, and future. If one leg is wobbly, the whole thing could come crashing down. EMDR makes sure each leg is stable, so you’re not just surviving—you’re thriving. By healing your past, managing your present, and preparing for the future, this method helps create a more balanced, resilient version of you.

It’s not just about quick fixes or temporary relief. This approach is about lasting change,

giving you the tools to handle whatever life throws your way, whether it’s a tough meeting,

an awkward social event, or that rogue sock that’s probably hiding in the dryer.

The three-pronged approach to EMDR is more than just a method - it’s a full-scale strategy

for emotional wellbeing. It doesn’t just help you make peace with the past; it teaches you

how to stay calm in the present and walk confidently into the future. And let’s be honest, who

couldn’t use a little extra emotional resilience these days? If you’re ready to tackle your emotional health with a method that works on all levels—and maybe laugh a little along the way—EMDR might just be the game-changer you’ve been looking for.
